Stories in Stone(rock cycle) Inquiry Science
Leawood Middle

What was the purpose of this project? To stimulate interest and inquiry about how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Did the project fulfill that purpose? If so, how? Definitely. Students scores on the rock cycle quiz improved by 23%. Even more than that...their interests were sparked. They asked questions to do more than what was required...they brought in their own samples and they were using them to look and try and find out their own answers.

Please include the number of students involved in this project, grade levels and subject areas covered. 60 students in 6th grade. We covered earth science.

Describe how Foundation funds and this project benefited students. I was able to purchase the supplies and the lesson activities to supplement our textbook. We were able to get students involved in "doing science" at a level that the textbook lab have not done.

Do you feel this project should be replicated in other schools throughout the district? Please explain. Yes. I have served as a 6th grade science specialist this year and I have shown the other teachers from all the middle schools what could be done.

Other comments: I have compiled a series of photos that document what we did. The kids are also putting together a movie about what they learned that I will be sending over.
