World Music Drumming
Heartland Elementary

What was the purpose of this project? The purpose of the "World Music Drumming" grant was to add additional percussion instruments to the drums at Heartland so that all students would have a drum to share. We were also able to add a solo instrument that we did not have.

Did the project fulfill that purpose? If so, how? The project did fill the purpose. We received resources for one additional medium tubano; a djembe and some ginkoguis.

Please include the number of students involved in this project, grade levels and subject areas covered. The twenty three members of Heartland's drum ensemble "Drumline", benefitted from the grant, as did all students at Heartland form Kindergarten to fifth grade.

Describe how Foundation funds and this project benefited students. Students have been able to experience drumming in the style from Ghana, an aural tradition, rather than reading written rhythms. The students have mastered pieces of music with up to seven different parts, each with a different rhythm.

Do you feel this project should be replicated in other schools throughout the district? Please explain. I feel that world drumming is a wonderful way to teacher rhythm, community, and musicianship. Ideally, all schools who are interested should have access to the instruments and training necessary to teach this program.
