Finding Our Way Cottonwood Point Elementary
What was the purpose of this project?
Finding Our Way is an orienteering activity in which students use an accurate, detailed map and compass to find points in the landscape. Orienteering integrates physical activity with academics.
Did the project fulfill that purpose? If so, how?
With the use of a detailed map and compass, the students learned how to do mapping, cardinal directions, measurement, distance and data collection.
Please include the number of students involved in this project, grade levels and subject areas covered.
This grant introduced 4th and 5th grade students and covered reading and terminology while using google earth maps of the school and grounds.
Describe how Foundation funds and this project benefited students.
The students will benefit by improving overall performance physically, socially and academically. Compasses can be used year after year, moving along with the students as their knowledge level grows.
Do you feel this project should be replicated in other schools throughout the district? Please explain.
This project could easily be replicated throughout the district with the use of compasses and maps. Since it can start with basic use for younger students and grow each year in complexity this grows with their knowledge level.
