Cougar Dens: An Interdisciplinary Literature Activity
Overland Trail Elementary

What was the purpose of this project? The purpose was to provide funding to purchase books to be used in our school-wide Cougar Den activities. The books are used to teach the Blue Valley Virtues through literature.

Did the project fulfill that purpose? If so, how? Yes, we were able to purchase 15 copies of A Chair for My Mother (to add to a partial set already at our school) and also 40 copies of Too Many Tamales.

Please include the number of students involved in this project, grade levels and subject areas covered. This is a school-wide project, so involves the entire school, approximately 600 students.

Describe how Foundation funds and this project benefited students. The funds provided allowed for us to have the books needed at our school to immediately begin our Cougar Den activities within the first weeks of school, without having to take a lot of extra time to locate the books from other library sources. The benefit to all the students is that everyone in the building has an opportunity to discuss and begin to concentrate on applying the Blue Valley Virtues each day to get the year off to a positive start.

Do you feel this project should be replicated in other schools throughout the district? Please explain. Certainly, any time that students and staff can discuss the Blue Valley Virtues and how each virtue relates to daily living in a positive way is time well spent.

Other comments: We appreciate so much the fact that we are able to begin the year with books to implement this project.
