OTE Math Backpacks
Overland Trail Elementary

What was the purpose of this project? The purpose of OTE Math Backpacks is to give students in grades 1-5 an opportunity to practice math at home. This grant will bring a literature connection into the backpacks by funding books on the math topics highlighted at each grade level that will also be included in the backpacks.

Did the project fulfill that purpose? If so, how? Yes! Math logs in each backpack document the excitement students and their families have for the math activities. Adding a book to the activities will increase the learning and the fun.

Please include the number of students involved in this project, grade levels and subject areas covered. Students in grades 1-5 at OTE have access to math backpacks. Backpacks are sent home by classroom teachers for varying amounts of time. Activities in the backpacks reflect objectives at each grade level that are new and/or need to be reinforced.

Describe how Foundation funds and this project benefited students. This Donate Now grant has helped students reinforce their learning through educational math games. It also helps students see connections between disciplines, specifically reading and math.

Do you feel this project should be replicated in other schools throughout the district? Please explain. Other schools could certainly create math backpacks to help all students practice their math skills and enjoy learning with their families.

Other comments: The OTE community is extremely generous! Thank you for your support of this activity; I hope your family enjoys the new and improved math backpacks!
