5.20.2009 Sunset Ridge Elementary students are 'Measuring Up' Students at Sunset Ridge are getting more practice and hands-on learning with a variety of measuring tools and manipulatives thanks to a grant funded by the Blue Valley Educational Foundation. Pam Kamlowsky, 5th grade teacher and math coach, authored the grant to get measuring tools for the elementary school. "The measurement unit was the one area in math where we did not have any supporting tools or equipment," said Kamlowsky. She ordered "Measure Up" kits for each grade level that included measuring equipment like angles, tanagrams, scales and games related to measurement in both standard and metric units. The kits also include a teacher's book complete with lesson plans, assessment and worksheets with questions related to the lessons. The different measuring activities can be set up in stations so the students can work in small groups and allows the teacher to help students in a specific measurement activity whether they need extra help or a more challenging activity. - 30 -
